History
The Tamilnadu State Transport Corporation ( Kumbakonam) Ltd., with Headquarters at Kumbakonam formerly known as Cholan Roadways Corporation Limited was formed on 01.03.1972 with 178 buses taken over from two major private operators viz. Sri Rama Vilas Bus Service Ltd., and M/s. Raman & Raman Pvt. Ltd., Kumbakonam with 1500 employees for the purpose of rendering efficient, economic, adequate and proper bus transport facilities to the public.
Gradually, it grew in size and when its fleet strength became 901, it was bifurcated on 31.03.1985, by forming two separate Corporation viz. Cholan Roadways Corporation with Head Quarters at Kumbakonam. Dheeran Chinnamalai Transport Corporation Ltd., Trichy, with Head Quarters at Tiruchirapalli.
However on 30.12.2003, M/s. Tamilnadu State Transport
Corporation (Kumbakonam Division-II) Ltd., Trichy erstwhile Dheeran Chinnamalai
Transport Corporation, Tamilnadu State Transport Corporation (Kumbakonam
Division-III) Ltd., Karaikkudi erstwhile Marudhu pandiyar Transport Corporation
Ltd., and Tamilnadu State Transport Corporation (Kumbakonam Division-IV)
Ltd.,Pudukkotai erstwhile Veeran Alagumuthu Transport Corporation Ltd., were
merged with Tamilnadu State Transport Corporation (Kumbakonam Division–I)
Limited, Kumbakonam and subsequently the name of the resulting Corporation was
renamed as Tamilnadu State Transport Corporation (Kumbakonam) Limited,
Kumbakonam.
The amalgamated Corporation
has six regions namely Kumbakonam, Trichy, Karur, Pudukottai, Karaikudi,
Nagapattinam. The Regions are headed by General Managers, who are supported by
Teams of Officers in Commercial, Technical, Operation, Accounts and Audit.
The Corporation is serving 27.46 lakhs passengers per day.
The Tamil Nadu State Transport
Department Corporation limited, Kumbakonam is headed by its Managing Director.
The head Office is located at 27, New Railway station Road, Kumbakonam.
The Operational jurisdiction of the Corporation spread
over in 12 Revenue Districts and Inter-State bus operation to Pondicherry,
Karaikkal. Since, the World famous Veilankanni Shrine, World heritage monument
Thanjai Prahadeeswarar
Temple, Srirengam Temple, Swamimalai, Navagraha Temples, Samayapuram located in
our operational area, it has the unique operation to these Pilgrim centres on
auspicious days.
